What were the Crusades?
The Crusades were a series of military expeditions launched by Christian Europe in an attempt to reclaim territory from the Muslims. In addition to waging war on the Muslims, the Crusaders also fought Paganism and numerous Christian sects. These holy wars were sanctioned by Popes and many civic leaders, and they had far-reaching repercussions, some of which continue to be felt today, despite the fact that the Crusades ended in the 14th century.

The cause of the Crusades was that a holy war which centered around the holy city of Jerusalem. Up to 3000 christains had been insulted and persecuted in every way.The first crusade was mostly caused by the preaching of Peter Hermit. He had been preaching of a crusade.

What were the weapons used-by the crusades?

​ During the middle ages weapons were given to men according to their status in the feudal system. The lower class or soldiers used pole arms, battle axes, maces, billhook, caltrops, flail, halberd, longbow, bows, crossbows, pike, poleaxe, quarterstaff, spears, war hammers batons, and the scimitar. The upper class or knight used the lance, sword, dagger and shield. All medieval me were expected to use their weapons to fight for the for the king when needed.

Most of the men in the crusades armies died in the first two missions. They won control of Jerusalem in the third crusade. They had trouble recruiting men to fight so they recruited 15000 children and told them faith would lead them to victory. Most children were sold for slaves before reaching the holy land.

In the third crusade Richard the lion hart led the armies to fight again for jerusalem. Richard worked out a truce with Saladin because his men were not fit to fight. The truce allowed Christians to visit Jerusalem without problems.

Currently named Antakya Antioch was founded in the 4th century B.C.E by Seleucus I Nictor. Antakya is so important to the Christians because Paul preached his first christian sermon there. In the city of Antakya followers of Jesus were the first to call them selves Christians.
